When Journey was just the figment of our imaginations, one value that we wanted to incorporate was making a difference in the community. Of course, we wanted to see life change in the walls of our church, but we also wanted to make an impact outside of them.
Room in the Inn is a fantastic ministry in town. It is one of the only places in Chattanooga where a woman or a mother with children can find shelter AND a path to a new life through counseling, training, and hiring assistance WHILE having their basic needs for shelter, food, and security be met.
Our involvement with RITI came to be just as any pastor would want…people who were already investing there.
Many times, churches find missions opportunities and then ask their attenders to support it.
And that works many times for many great opportunities.
However, when those in the church are already investing in worthwhile causes “on their own time”, the mission becomes all that sweeter.
Over the years, we have regularly helped to provide meals that are served to the residents…
help provide items for their pantry for residents…
play with the children during special events…
and help residents that are “graduating” the program get a leg up on their new life as they engage life on their own once again.
It is a ministry that I believe was at the heart of Jesus, to care for those who needed it.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19 (ESV)
Thank you to everyone who has supported this ministry over the years.
Thank you for bringing excellent meals each month.
Thank you for bringing supplies for those who are in need and those who are graduating.
Thank you for making the lives of others in need a priority for your time and resources.
Thank you for sharing the heart of Jesus to those who are feeling very little love.
If you have signed up to bring a meal this month or to help restock their pantry, don’t forget to bring your items this Sunday. I know they will be put to good use!
