There are so many things in scripture that cause me to scratch my head and wonder, did God really say that? One that comes to mind is Matthew 5:29-30…
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
I mean…good grief.
Can any of us read this and still keep our eyes?
One of the problems with the age of the internet, Facebook, and instant messaging is the sheer volume of information that we are flooded with on a daily basis. The quotes, messages, memes, and opinions that you can be subjected to are truly staggering to comprehend sometimes…
…and people buy them…hook…line…and sinker.
And that is a problem if you are trying to pattern your life after the teachings of Jesus.
To be fair, they’re not new. We’ve been saying them for generations.
So long, in fact, that most people just accept them because no one really knows where they began.
If enough people repeat them, they must be true…
Right?
More than dealing with difficult sayings of the Bible are wading through the false things attributed to the Bible…and therefore to God.
This weekend we are staring a new series that seeks to find the truth about 5 sayings that are generally accepted but are questionable when you search the words of God.
The first may be the most sinister of them all…
“God wants you to be happy.”
(Of course He does…right?)
But what if there is something better that He wants for you more? What if the generally accepted idea of happiness isn’t very happy at all?
If that were the case, why aren’t more Christians just that…happy?
When we begin to discover the truth, it is very possible that the truth will actually set you free, just as God said it would.
